How to Read These Charging Specs
These six numbers determine how fast a given EV charges and how far it goes — but they only tell the full story once you know what each one actually measures.
Usable Battery Capacity
This is the portion of the battery pack the vehicle's software actually lets you charge and discharge, not the raw physical pack size. Manufacturers reserve a buffer at both the top and bottom of the pack to protect long-term battery health, so usable capacity is typically a bit smaller than the "gross" number sometimes quoted in marketing materials. It's the figure that matters for range and charging-time math, which is why it's what this calculator and lookup use.
EPA Range — What It Means and Its Limits
EPA range comes from a standardized U.S. government test cycle designed to let consumers compare vehicles on equal footing — not a promise of what you'll get on your commute. Real-world range typically runs lower at highway speeds, in cold weather, with heavy loads or aggressive driving, and higher in mild weather and stop-and-go city driving. Treat the EPA figure as a consistent basis for comparison between vehicles, not a literal forecast for any specific trip.
Onboard AC Charger (Max L2 Rate)
Every EV has a physical limit on how much AC power its onboard charger can convert to DC and send to the battery, regardless of how powerful the wall charger or EVSE you plug into is. A vehicle rated for 7.2 kW onboard AC will charge at roughly 7.2 kW whether it's connected to a basic 240V outlet or a top-of-the-line 19.2 kW home charging station — the vehicle, not the charger, sets the ceiling for AC charging speed.
Max DC Fast Charging Rate & the 10→80% Estimate
The max DC figure is a peak rate, not a sustained one. Real DC fast-charging sessions follow a curve: charging speed ramps up quickly at low state of charge, holds near peak through the middle of the range, then tapers substantially above roughly 80% to protect the battery. The 10→80% time shown for each vehicle reflects that curve and is the figure most useful for planning a road-trip charging stop, since continuing past 80% on a DC fast charger is usually slower than it's worth compared to just driving on and stopping again later.
Connector Type
NACS (the Tesla-designed connector, now becoming the North American industry standard), CCS, and CHAdeMO are not interchangeable without an adapter, and not every adapter supports both AC and DC charging at full rated power. Confirm your specific vehicle's connector and any adapter's power limits before relying on it for a fast-charging stop.
