⚡ Level 2 is the Sweet Spot

A 240V Level 2 charger at home (7.2–11.5 kW) adds 20–35 miles of range per hour — enough to top up overnight for most daily drivers.

🏎️ 10–80% Rule for DC Fast

DC fast chargers slow significantly above 80% to protect battery health. Most drivers stop at 80% on road trips, then continue driving.

❄️ Cold Weather Impact

EV charging slows in cold temperatures. Batteries below 32°F may charge at 50–70% of rated speed until they warm up.

How This Charge Time Estimate Works

The math behind this calculator is a straightforward energy-and-power relationship, not a proprietary model. First it figures out how much energy your battery actually needs: usable battery capacity (kWh) multiplied by the difference between your target and starting state of charge. Then it divides that energy requirement by the effective charging power of whichever charger level you've selected, which gives you a time in hours. The result panel above converts that into hours and minutes, and multiplies the kWh delivered by your electricity rate to estimate cost.

Why AC and DC Charging Use Different Efficiency Numbers

Not every kilowatt-hour that leaves the wall or the charging station reaches your battery. This calculator applies roughly 88% efficiency to AC charging (Level 1 and Level 2) and roughly 93% to DC fast charging, because AC power has to pass through your vehicle's onboard charger — an AC-to-DC converter — before it reaches the battery, and that conversion loses some energy as heat. DC fast charging sends power to the battery more directly through the vehicle's charging system, which is part of why it's typically a bit more efficient per session, even though it puts more thermal stress on the battery than slower AC charging does.

Two different bottlenecks control how fast your car actually charges, and neither one is simply "how powerful is the charger."

Why Cold Weather Slows Charging

Lithium-ion battery chemistry is temperature-sensitive. A cold battery has higher internal resistance, so the vehicle's charging system deliberately limits current to protect the cells — batteries below freezing can charge at a noticeably reduced fraction of their rated speed until they warm up, whether from ambient temperature, driving, or (on many newer EVs) an automatic pre-conditioning routine that starts warming the pack once you've navigated to a DC fast charger as your destination.

Where These Numbers Come From
